Some of my Favourite Talks at BrightonSEO, April 2019

There are already some excellent recaps of April’s BrightonSEO, as well as some great articles inspired on talks which I think you should read. So, this isn’t yet another list with the presentations.

I felt this edition of BrightonSEO felt slightly different. That on site creche seemed like a great idea for parents to attend. Even the programme had an element of inclusiveness, which made it feel better than usual.

Each of the talks I attended or seen later have added some more to my knowledge, but some also reassured or inspired me. I wanted to mention some of my favourites. Kudos to all speakers and John Mueller & Hannah Smith though. It takes some guts to jump on stage in front of so many peers.

Creativity

I’ve had some conversations about creativity in marketing. Most of the time, creativity is linked to visual art or writing. In marketing these days, it is more to do with how to solve a problem or make life easier. This is what Mike Osolinski did with his Command Line script to automate repetitive tasks.

Real life

This is the one that has inspired and reassured me the most. How many times have we provided solid recommendations which got rejected, someone made us feel insecure at a big meeting? This is real life at its best. Thanks Areej AbuAli for bringing this up and tell everyone how normal it is. Yes, she also talked about restructuring websites to improve indexing.

More creativity

You need to take down pages when products are discontinued. It’s bad for UX and your ecommerce business. Wait, is it though? I liked Luke Carthy’s recommendations to keep monetising or benefiting from those pages, and so clearly presented.

Meaningful

When we do SEO or digital marketing generally, we need to focus on what is going to drive profit, traffic or enhance our brand awareness. It’s also to do with efficiency — it takes less time and effort focusing on what is more important. I enjoyed Izzi Smith‘s no-nonsense talk about driving meaningful traffic using enriched SERPS, featured snippets and structured data.

Myth busting

When leading on digital optimisation, my teams or others not too versed on digital marketing used to think that it was just reviewing articles or videos with a view to delete or to add some more. It is important to see first how to close any content gaps. This is why I think Razvan Gavrilas’ talk can provide some learnings and bust any myths.

There are so many others, like Fili Wiese — SEO Expert’s on why sitemaps are so important or Chris Simmance on tips to speed your site up. Check them out.

Thanks for reading!
